Lewd allegations are surfacing after a charismatic clergyman and community leader with ties to Wichita resigned in disgrace from a prominent church in Dallas.
Tyrone Gordon led St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Wichita at a time when it showed vibrant growth and he also served on the Wichita Board of Education. Gordon submitted his resignation and relinquished his ordination at St. Luke Community United Methodist Church.
A 26-year-old pastor who grew up attending St. Luke has filed a lawsuit, listing graphic allegations that Gordon coerced him and other young people into engaging in sexual acts, sometimes in the pastor's office. Rev. Cameron Jerrod Greer is suing Gordon, St. Luke and the North Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Upon his arrival, hopes were high for Gordon, who was seen as the next great pastor at St. Luke, one of Texas' most prominent African-American churches. Among the well-connected members of the church are Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price and former Mayor Ron Kirk, now a member of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet.
Bishop Scott Jones, who leads the Kansas Annual West Conference of the United Methodist Church, told Dallas television station KXAS that there are no pending complaints against Gordon from his time at St. Mark's.
