National Black AIDS/HIV Awareness Day

African-Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS.

While making up only 12 percent of the U.S. population, African-Americans account for 48 percent of new HIV cases. AIDS is the leading cause of death for black women ages 25 to 34. Sunday, February 7, 2010 marks the tenth year of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

The theme for this year’s awareness day is “HIV/AIDS Prevention – a Choice and a Lifestyle!”  In support of this day, the Sedgwick County Health Department will offer free HIV testing on Tuesday, February 9 at the 2716 West Central Health Department location. The testing will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Results will be available within 15 minutes.

The Sedgwick County Health Department will also offer free, rapid-results testing at the Our Fantasy Complex (3201 South Hillside, Wichita) Friday, February 26 from 10 p.m. until Saturday, February 27 at 2 a.m. Contact the Sedgwick County Health Department, 660-7300, for information about HIV/AIDS. Get educated. Get tested. Get treated. Get involved!
