Wichita police officers will be watching for speeders this month on the city's busiest and most accident-prone street. Interim deputy police chief Darren Moore says officers will be watching for speeding violations along Kellogg during the month of July. He says officers from all four bureaus will be involved, and they will be set up at different locations along Kellogg at different times of the day.
Moore says there has been a total of 145 injury crashes on Kellogg in the first six months of 2008 and 2009. There have been 2 deaths this year, compared to 7 at this time a year ago.
Moore says an operation was conducted Wednesday on East Kellogg. There were 59 speeding citations issued, and some drivers were clocked at 80, 87 and 95 miles an hour. In recent days, drivers have been caught going over 100 miles an hour. Speeding tickets will have fines of $200 to $300. Moore says Kellogg stands out as the street with the biggest problem in Wichita, and it creates a safety concern not only for motorists, but also for officers who are working accidents and stopping vehicles.
